New Delhi: There are two National Food Technology Institutes (NFTs) operating under the administrative control of the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, namely; National Institute of Food Technology Entrepreneurship and Management (NIFTEM), Kundli, Haryana and Indian Institute of Food Processing Technology (IIFPT) in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu. The two Institutes were able to achieve the objectives for which they were created. Minister of State for Food Processing Industries Shri Prahlad Singh Patel gave this information in a written response to Lok Sabha today.

Twelve courses by NIFTEM and six courses by IIFPT are offered in the field of food technology and related sectors. They are the following in NIFTEM and IIFPT:

In NIFTEM:

  1. B.Tech (Food Technology Management)
  2. M.Tech. in Food Process Engineering and Management (FPEM)
  3. M.Tech. in Food Technology and Management (FTM)
  4. M.Tech. in Food Safety and Quality Management (FSQM)
  5. M.Tech. in Food Supply Chain Management (FSCM)
  6. M.Tech. in operation and management of food factories (FPOM)
  7. PhD in Food Engineering (FE)
  8. PhD in Food Science and Technology (FST)
  9. doctorate in basic and applied sciences (BAS)
  10. doctorate in agricultural and environmental sciences (AES)
  11. PhD in Food Business Management and Entrepreneurship Development (FBM & ED)
  12. Master of Business Administration (MBA);

In IIFPT:

  1. B.Tech (Food Technology)
  2. M.Tech (Food Technology) in Food Process Technology
  3. M.Tech (Food Technology) in Food Process Engineering
  4. M.Tech (Food Technology) in Food Safety and Quality Assurance
  5. PhD (Food Technology) in Food Process Technology
  6. Doctorate (Food Technology) in Food Process Engineering

The Indian Institute of Food Processing Technology (IIFPT) and the National Institute of Food Technology Entrepreneurship and Management (NIFTEM) offer B.Tech, M.Tech and PhD programs in food processing and related fields. The number of sanctioned students has been increased to meet the growing demand for labor in the food processing industries. There are also other state funded institutions / universities, state run institutions / universities and private institutions / universities offering Diploma, Graduate Diploma and PhD in Food Technology and its related specializations. to meet the demand for labor in food processing industries.

At present, the ministry has no proposal to establish more NFT institutes in the country. According to the latest annual industry survey (2017-18), the total number of jobs in the food processing sector registered in the past three years, i.e. 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18, by State / UT, is included in Annex.
