Teamsters Director of Food Processing Peter Finn Testifies in Support of SB 1308

This morning, Peter Finn, director of the Teamsters food processing division and secretary-treasurer of Local 856, addressed the California State Senate Agriculture Committee. He testified in support of California State Senate Bill 1308, legislation that would clarify and strengthen existing “Buy American” requirements by prohibiting schools from purchasing non-American products unless it there is a price difference of 25% or more.

“When public schools buy agricultural and processed food products from other countries, California loses good union jobs,” Finn said. “Foreign outsourcing harms workers and communities that depend on the agriculture and food processing industries to support local economies. Students are also suffering. California agriculture adheres to strict health, food safety, and environmental protection laws that ensure a safe, high-quality food supply.

The bill supports strong union jobs and is now referred to the Committee on Government Organization. It is sponsored by State Senator Anna Caballero (D-Salinas).
